Semiannual Development Planning

This is an example of what a completed SDP may look like. Of course, depending on many factors, any of these sections could be shorter or longer—this is really just to give you a sense of the type of items you could include (and the level of specificity you should try to aim for), but the format is designed to be very flexible!

- Passed qualification exam

- Submitted paper #1
- Method for project #2 has solid evaluations
- Began draft for paper #2
- Presented "talk" at Cool Conference
- Wrote and submitted fellowship application to Funding Agency
- Supervised Alan Hamming (summer undergraduate student)
  - oversaw development of preliminary method for x project
  - helped go over and polish his research talk
- Organized new journal club

Obstacles (since last meeting)

- Paper submission #1 was rejected at Fancy Journal
  - submitted now to Fancier Journal
- Started Distinction in Teaching program, but because of unexpected personal commitment, could not complete this year
  - plan to try again next year
- New journal club did not gain much traction
  - will reevaluate and see if it makes sense to change the format

Research goals (for the next 6 months)

- Apply method for project #2 to more applications
- Develop a webserver for project #2
- Follow up with collaborator re potential experiments to validate experiments
- Think about interesting side angle to extend project #2

Personal/professional goals

Update: now considering academia for long term goals

In the next half year, plan to:
- Submit paper #2 (need to discuss potential venues)
- Present work at a national conference

Feedback

- Mentoring Alan was a great experience
  - I'd like more opportunities to mentor junior students
- I'm making more progress with writing
  - having more concrete deadlines and structured feedback would be helpful
